The UConn Huskies couldn’t celebrate their 13 point home win over Louisville for very long as the mood of the Huskies switched drastically early Sunday morning. This occurred when they found out the terrible news involving teammate, Jasper Howard. Howard was involved in a scuffle on campus early Sunday morning and was stabbed and killed.
Howard was just 20 years of age and was the Huskies starting Cornerback. The junior played in the win against Louisville on Saturday and had 11 tackles and a fumble recovery. It is believed that the stabbing occurred around 12:30 Sunday morning after someone pulled the fire alarm at a dance at the student union. Howard was one of two people who were stabbed and no specific details were released on the other victim. The Huskies are planning on playing their next game, Saturday in West Virginia, but will playing with heavy hearts during this game and the rest of the season.
Howard was described by Jeff Jacobs, of the Hartford Courant, as “a hard-working player, someone serious about the game, and seriously involved with his sisters and mother in Miami, where he grew up.” Howard was going to be a father and his body had to be identified by Coach, Randy Edsall. Captain and teammate, Desi Cullen, said during a news conference that the team will make sure his kid “will grow up with 100 uncles.” The stabbing occurred during UConn’s homecoming weekend and Howard was taken by ambulance to Windham Community Memorial Hospital. He was later airlifted by Lifestar Helicopter to Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. The second victim, whose name hasn’t been released, was treated and released from Windham Community Memorial Hospital.
It was a terribly sad tragedy that has left many people heartbroken and devastated. Howard will never be forgotten in this world and I extended my sympathies to Howard’s family and the rest of the Huskies community.
